My new gown was much admired at our summer banquet the other week. I
attach a couple of photos. Thank you so much for all you did to bring
it to completion.
Colonel W J Chesshyre, Clerk to The Worshipful Company of Gunmakers
The Proof House, 48-50 Commercial Road, London E1 1LP
THE GUNMAKERS' COMPANY
Founded by Royal Charter on 14th March 1637, the Gunmakers' Company
is one of the few of the more than100 City Livery Companies which still
carry on the work for which they were founded. In addition to its responsibility
for proving small arms, the Company has had further obligations placed
upon it as a result of the Firearms (Amendment) Act 1988, namely the
examination and certification of deactivated firearms and restricted
magazine weapons. The proof and examination of weapons is to ensure
the safety of the public.
Because of the noise of proving weapons, and the fear
of the risk of black powder storage, the London Proof House was established
outside the City limits, a unique location for the home of a City Livery
Company. It still stands on the original site, then Goodmans Fields,
Whitechapel, but subsequently renamed Commercial Road.
